5 Important Questions to Ask Before Hiring a Maid in Singapore

Finding the right maid to hire in Singapore can be a daunting task. With so many agencies to choose from and a wide range of services offered, it’s important to take the time to research and ask the right questions before hiring a maid.

Helpful Tips!!

Here are the top five important questions to ask an employment agency before hiring a maid:

1. What are the cost of the services?

Cost of services like agency fees, miscellaneous/admin fees, medical examination fees, overseas processing fees, etc. Employers need to make sure that these fees are clear and no other hidden fees before signing a contract or hiring a helper.

2. What types of helpers do they have?

In Singapore, there are Transfer helpers – those are helpers currently in Singapore looking for a new employer. Ex-Singapore helpers are those helpers who worked previously in Singapore but are currently in their home country or not in Singapore. New Helpers are those helpers who have no experience as a helper or have little experience in their home country. Ex-abroad helpers are helpers who are new to Singapore but experienced abroad.

3. What is the maid’s experience or reference letter available?

Depending on what job scope you want for your helper, you need to make sure to your chosen agency that the helper’s biodata is tallied on MOM Employment History. You can check the helper’s experiences during interviews and also if available, references from their current or previous employers.

4. What is the agency’s policy on refunds, replacements, and other services?

From the Ministry of Manpower website – “From 1 June 2022, employment agencies must refund at least 50% of the service fees paid by the employer; if the MDW’s employment is terminated within the first six months of employment, and other refund conditions are met.” You need the ask the agency about this MOM 50% refund regulation and also if there are replacement options for you in case the helper you hired doesn’t work out. Other services are work permit renewal, passport renewal, or embassy home leave processing.

5. What is the agency’s policy regarding communication and support?

It is important to understand how often communication will occur and how the agency will support your needs. Ask about their customer service policies and availability. You should also inquire about their process for handling any issues that may arise.

By taking the time to ask these important questions, you can ensure that you have the right maid to meet your needs and expectations.
